NWCA announces annual 2004 Scholastic Award winner

Each year the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has the honor of recognizing a national head and assistant coach of the year along with wrestler of the year. This year, the NWCA is pleased to announce that Bobby DeBerry of Sunnyside High School in Tucson, AZ was named head coach of the year, Tom Beuglas of Parkview High School in Lilburn, GA was named assistant coach of the year and Coleman Scott of Waynesburg High School in Waynesburg, PA was named wrestler of the year.

For Bobby DeBerry it was not a question of should he be recognized as national coach of the year but when should he be honored as national coach of the year. After winning his seventh consecutive state championship and eighth in ten years, DeBerry was named NWCA head coach of the year. DeBerry’s 2003-04 season was another year in perfection as the Blue Devils amassed a perfect 16-0 record in duals and captured team titles at the Peoria and Sonoran Region Tournaments. DeBerry then guided his team to a 4A state championship winning by an astonishing 93.5 points over the second place team. In winning the state title, six individuals captured titles including his son Kyle, a freshman at 130lbs. During his coaching career, DeBerry has compiled a career coaching record of 287-33. This season he also coached Junior National runner-up Nick Gallick and Cadet National Champion Renee Torres. He was also the high school coach for NCAA Champion Eric Larkin of Arizona State University. DeBerry’s assistant coach Manuel Martinez was named the 2002 NWCA Assistant Coach of the Year.

After being at Parkview High School for 11 years, Tom Beuglas was instrumental in leading the Panthers to their most successful season ever in 2003-04. For his efforts, Beuglas was named NWCA Assistant Coach of the Year. During the 2003-04 year, the Panthers team won its first-ever state titles, taking both the state duals and the traditional state tourney. The Panthers were 30-1 in dual meets, won nine tournaments and set a record for most points at the traditional state tournament. Beuglas was a three time winner of the NWCA Assistant Coach of the Year for the state of Georgia.

In one of the most competitive years for “wrestler of the year,” Coleman Scott earned the honor over a very deep field. Scott was a three time Pennsylvania state champion from Waynesburg Central High School, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. During his stellar career he compiled a career record of 156-12 and was a perfect 43-0 in his senior year. After winning his third state title he was named the outstanding wrestler. He was also named the outstanding wrestler at the Dapper Dan Classic and the Dream Team Classic. He won the Powerade Championship three times, as well as the Beast of the East and the Ironman Championships. Scott was equally successful on the junior and cadet level winning two Junior National Freestyle Championships and a Cadet National Greco Championship. Scott is a member of the National Honor Society and was named Lions Club Boy of the Month. He also takes an active role in the community volunteering at his local church and coaching youth T-ball. Scott will continue his wrestling career for John Smith at Oklahoma State University.

“On behalf of the NWCA Board of Directors we would like to congratulate our national award winners along with our regional and state award winners. Being honored as a national award winner is a testament to the hard work and dedication put forth by these individuals. DeBerry and Beuglas are great ambassadors for our sport and demonstrate a strong commitment to their profession. Coleman Scott has a wonderful future in our great sport and we look forward to watching him during his college career”, commented John Cook, NWCA Scholastic Director.

The NWCA scholastic award winners are selected by the NWCA Scholastic Board of Directors. A national award winner must have one his state and regional award.

DeBerry, Beuglas and Scott will be honored at the NWCA social at the 2005 NCAA Championships.
