Macon, GA- Wesleyan College is proud to welcome Ruben Chavez as the head coach of its new wrestling program that is currently recruiting athletes and plans to compete in the SSAC starting with the 2026 season. A native of West Liberty, Iowa, Chavez brings over two decades of wrestling and coaching experience to Wesleyan, having competed and coached at some of the highest levels of the sport. As a high school standout, he placed 5th and 3rd at the Iowa State Tournament before joining the University of Iowa, where he trained under NCAA, World, and Olympic Champions as part of teams that finished among the top five nationally. He later continued his development with the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, training alongside and mentoring elite athletes, including future NCAA Champions and All-Americans.
Chavez has spent more than 21 years coaching at the youth, club, high school, and collegiate levels in Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. Most recently, he served on the Texas USA Wrestling coaching staff for both men's and women's Freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions. He is also a USA Wrestling Copper, Bronze, Teal, and Silver Certified High Performance Leader, reflecting his commitment to professional growth and athlete development.
Originally from eastern Iowa, Chavez recently relocated from Dallas, Texas, where he worked as an IT Administrator before returning to his passion for collegiate coaching. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Iowa and an MBA from Western Governors University. An avid endurance athlete, he has completed four marathons and qualified for the Hyrox World Championships in 2023.
"I am here because I want to develop champions on and off the mat," said Chavez. "Wesleyan College is the perfect place to do that. Wesleyan's high academic standards and supportive environment help students succeed in every aspect of life. My goal is to build an integrity-driven, high-performing wrestling program that helps our student-athletes achieve greatness in wrestling and beyond."
