DALLAS, TX – November 1, 2026 – The National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) is pleased to announce that its Board of Directors has unanimously approved a significant change to the Association's athletic eligibility requirements, extending the maximum period of collegiate wrestling eligibility from four years to five years.
The new rule, effective immediately, will allow eligible collegiate wrestlers to compete for a fifth season, providing student-athletes an additional opportunity to represent their institutions and participate in collegiate wrestling.
Importantly, the new rule applies retroactively. Student-athletes who have previously exhausted their four seasons of collegiate wrestling eligibility may now return to competition for a fifth season, provided they continue to meet all other NCWA eligibility requirements.
While the change expands athletic eligibility, the NCWA will maintain its existing academic and enrollment requirements. Student-athletes must continue to meet all established eligibility standards, including minimum grade point average (GPA) requirements and appropriate collegiate enrollment status.
The Board's decision reflects the NCWA's continued commitment to providing opportunities for student-athletes to pursue both their academic and athletic goals. By extending eligibility to five years, the Association recognizes the changing landscape of collegiate athletics and the diverse academic paths students take toward completing their degrees.
The unanimous decision represents an important step forward for NCWA member institutions, coaches, and student-athletes, offering greater flexibility while preserving the academic standards and principles upon which the Association was founded.
The five-year eligibility rule is effective immediately and applies to the current 2026–27 wrestling season. Coaches are encouraged to review their current and former rosters to identify student-athletes who may now qualify for an additional season of competition.
