In the midst of recent online controversy surrounding the NCWA wrestling program at Tarleton State University, university leadership has made it clear to me that support for the student-athletes and the long-term vision for wrestling at Tarleton remains strong.

According to university leadership I have spoken with, nothing has changed regarding Tarleton's continued commitment to providing students with a competitive wrestling opportunity through its current NCWA program and the long-term aspiration of potentially launching the first NCAA Division I wrestling program in Texas.

In my interactions with Tarleton State President Dr. James Hurley, he has been - and continues to be - a strong supporter of the wrestling club and the opportunities it creates for student-athletes. His support played a major role in helping establish the program and giving it a strong foundation for growth. Dr. Hurley is a visionary leader who sees unlimited potential in students. The wrestling program and athletes are no exception.

What began as a startup club program quickly developed into one of the top programs in the NCWA, producing 19 All-Americans during its first two seasons and building national recognition in a remarkably short period of time.

My understanding of the original vision was always larger than simply building a successful club team. Through the newly formed and non-university affiliated Texas Collegiate Wrestling Foundation (TCWF), the program needed to demonstrate both sustainability and financial viability before an NCAA Division I program could be considered. Among the benchmarks includes raising a minimum of $2 million in startup funding, along with long-term commitments to help sustain a future varsity program.

Phase one of the plan focused on launching wrestling through the university's sport club department under the NCWA model. The fundraising efforts through the TCWF have not yet reached the level necessary for the university to begin consideration of an athletic department program. The growth and success of the current team have demonstrated significant student interest, competitive success, and organizational sustainability.

Throughout the process, coaches, athletes, parents, alumni, and supporters have continued working to grow the program while maintaining a culture centered on leadership, discipline, persistence, and character development. Those values remain at the heart of the Tarleton State wrestling experience.

Despite recent misinformation and speculation circulating online, the long-term vision for wrestling at Tarleton State remains alive. The commitment shown by university leadership, and supporters continues to move the program forward.
