NWCA-LED INITIATIVE APPROVED BY NCAA DIVISION I COUNCIL

MANHEIM, PA - The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced today that a proposal to amend first-date-of-competition legislation for Division I men's wrestling has been adopted by the NCAA Division I Council. The measure, championed by the NWCA on behalf of its members, allows Division I institutions to begin competition on Friday, October 30, for the 2026-27 season, two days earlier than the November 1 start date that has historically governed the sport.

The approved legislation specifically amends NCAA Bylaw 17.31.3 to state that a Division I institution shall not engage in its first date of competition (game or scrimmage) with outside competition in men's wrestling before the Friday of the 20th week prior to the NCAA Division I Men's Wrestling Championships finals. Division II and Division III programs are not affected by this change and will continue to observe a November 1 start date.

The NWCA advocated for this legislation on behalf of Division I wrestling coaches who sought greater scheduling flexibility at the start of the competitive season. For the 2026-27 season, November 1 falls on a Sunday, making the Friday start date particularly impactful — shifting the first allowable competition date to October 30 opens the entire opening weekend for competition, giving programs two additional days and coaches significantly more options as they build their annual schedules.

Adopted Legislation Language

PLAYING AND PRACTICE SEASONS -- MEN'S WRESTLING -- FIRST DATE OF COMPETITION -- 20 WEEKS PRIOR TO CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALS

Status: Adopted Final

Intent: In men's wrestling, to specify that an institution shall not engage in its first date of competition (game or scrimmage) with outside competition before the Friday of the 20th week prior to the Division I Men's Wrestling Championships finals.

Bylaw: Amend 17.31.3 as follows:

17.31.3 First Date of Competition. An institution shall not engage in its first date of competition (game or scrimmage) with outside competition in men's wrestling before the Friday of the 20th week prior to the NCAA Division I Men's Wrestling Championships finals.

"We are proud of our continued work alongside our collegiate leadership groups, and this is just another example of the NWCA advocating directly on behalf of our member coaches," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer.
