Manheim, Pennsylvania – After a 3-0 weekend at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Nashville, Tennessee, top-ranked Penn State closed out the 2024 calendar year 6-0 and riding a 62-match win streak as the final NWCA Division I Men's Wrestling Coaches Poll of 2024 was released on Monday.
The Nittany Lions won 29 of 30 matches and beat then-No. 16 Missouri 41-3, then-No. 19 Little Rock 44-0 and Binghamton 52-0. The 62 dual meet wins in a row is the 10
th-longest win streak in college wrestling history and is the longest in school history. Penn State's previous mark for longest win streak was 60, which was set from 2015-2019.
The Journeymen Collegiate Duals featured six of the nation's Top 25 teams as 17 total ranked programs were involved in dual competition prior to the Holidays.
No. 5 Ohio State (7-0) swept through its' competition on the first day in Nashville, topping No. 13 Iowa State 29-10, then-No. 25 North Carolina 23-11 and Lock Haven 36-6. Iowa State beat North Carolina 23-14 and Lock Haven 30-6.
Little Rock moved up two spots after a 2-1 weekend in Nashville, highlighted by a 24-16 win over then-No. 16 Missouri (2-5). Little Rock also beat Binghamton 27-16, while Missouri slid three spots to No. 19 after a 1-2 outing. The Tigers beat Binghamton 19-15.
Other ranked action over the past week saw No. 3 Oklahoma State improve to 6-0 under first-year head coach David Taylor after beating then-No. 7 Virginia Tech 34-9 in Stillwater. Virginia Tech (3-1) slipped one spot to No. 8 this week.
Sixth-ranked NC State improved to 6-0 following a road win at No. 12 Cornell 20-18.
No. 14 South Dakota State went east and won four duals. The Jackrabbits (5-2) opened up sweeping a quad at Rider which included wins over No. 18 Pittsburgh and then-No. 24 Maryland and host Rider. South Dakota State capped its trip with a 25-10 win at Drexel.
Pittsburgh beat Maryland 25-1 and Rider 28-12, while Maryland dropped out of the Top 25 this week after going 0-3 at the quad with an 18-17 loss to the host Broncs.
Oklahoma improved to 6-1, sweeping a home quad. The Sooners beat Chattanooga 26-14, CSU Bakersfield 38-7 and Southeast Community College (Neb.) 41-0.
In Kissimmee, Florida, No. 22 West Virginia (6-1) got back to its winning ways with three wins. The Mountaineers edged North Dakota State 22-21 on criteria, beat Campbell 31-12 and Wisconsin 25-13.
Then-No. 23 Oregon State fell 20-14 to host Utah Valley, dropping the Beavers (1-3) out of the Top 25 this week.
New entries into the poll this week are No. 24 Army West Point (4-1) and No. 25 Indiana (4-1). Army West Point moves into the poll for the first time since the Black Knights were ranked 17
th at the end of the 2019-20 season, while Indiana's ranked was ranked as high as 21
st during a six-week stretch last season.
NOTE: The next NWCA Division I Men's Wrestling Coaches Poll will be released on January 7, 2025.
Methodology: The NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll is voted on by two coaches from each Division I wrestling conference. Each first-place vote is worth 25 points, 24 points for a second-place vote, 23 points for a third-place vote, and so on, through to one point for a 25th-place vote. The poll is based on dual meet results.
