Hannibal, MO – February 3, 2025 – Hannibal-LaGrange University is proud to announce the return of wrestling and the hiring of John Lewis as the 3rd Head Coach of the men's wrestling program. With a deep-rooted passion for wrestling and a wealth of experience in coaching and program development, Coach Lewis is set to lead the resurgence of the Trojans wrestling program with a clear vision and unwavering commitment to excellence and a Christ-centered culture.
Wrestling is an individual sport that thrives on teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. For Coach Lewis, wrestling has been a lifelong blessing, shaping his journey from a standout wrestler at Ponderosa High School to a collegiate athlete at NCAA Division II CSU-Pueblo, and now as a seasoned coach. His extensive background in coaching at both Otero College and Trinidad State College has equipped him with the experience and leadership necessary to rebuild and elevate Hannibal-LaGrange's wrestling program.
Hannibal-LaGrange University has a rich history in wrestling, with a tradition of developing student-athletes who compete at a high level while embodying the values of discipline and integrity. The program originally launched in 2008 and remained a vital part of the university's athletic department until 2022, producing competitive teams and talented wrestlers throughout its tenure. During that span, Trojan wrestlers qualified for the national championship in 10 different years, and the program proudly produced two All-Americans, Bryce Alexander and Dan Capp, both in 2014. The revival of men's wrestling marks an exciting chapter in HLGU's legacy, and the return of the program reflects the institution's commitment to fostering student-athlete success both on and off the mat.
"One of our goals in restarting the wrestling program was to find the right coach—someone who not only has the experience and passion for the sport but who also believes in the mission of Hannibal-LaGrange University," said Clay Biggs, Athletic Director at HLGU. "Coach Lewis is committed to building more than just a program; he is committed to developing a Christ-honoring culture that reflects the mission and vision of our university. His leadership, dedication, and emphasis on character development align with what we want this program to represent."
"For the past five years, my connections within the wrestling community have helped me recruit and develop student-athletes at Otero College and Trinidad State College," said Coach Lewis. "My goal at Hannibal-LaGrange University is to provide structure, organization, and communication in all facets of the program. Leadership sets the tone, and my expectations will remain unwavering as we establish a culture of discipline, hard work, and academic success."
Coach Lewis has a proven track record of fostering student-athletes who excel both on and off the mat. His coaching philosophy emphasizes overcoming adversity, embracing the process, and upholding high academic standards.
During his two year tenure at Trinidad State College, Coach Lewis successfully recruited 52 wrestlers for the men's and women's programs, an accomplishment that highlights his ability to attract top talent. His experience coaching at the NJCAA National Tournament and mentoring multiple All-Americans further showcases his ability to develop elite competitors. However, beyond accolades and achievements, his ultimate goal is to shape student-athletes into productive citizens who uphold Christian principles and contribute positively to their communities.
"Wrestling is about more than just wins and losses—it's about developing young men who are prepared to face life's challenges with resilience and integrity," added Coach Lewis. "With the support of my mentors, coaching staff, and athletic director, I am excited to lay the foundation for a successful and respected wrestling program at Hannibal-LaGrange University."
The Hannibal-LaGrange University community eagerly anticipates the return of men's wrestling and welcomes Coach Lewis with great enthusiasm. His leadership, vision, and deep ties to the wrestling community are expected to propel the program to new heights.
