Interim Director of Athletics,
Jessica Yonkers is excited to announce the hiring of
Denver Stonecheck as the new wrestling head coach for the 2025-26 season. Denver has served as the wrestling assistant coach for the past three seasons and is ready to take over the helm through his passion to serve the Lord and bring glory to God on and off the mat.
Denver has gained experience in the wrestling world from a young age all the way to his success at Life University. Coach Stonecheck attended West Forsyth High School in Cumming, Georgia where he became a 4X Region Champion. His strong career then continued at Life University where he led his team to a NAIA National Championship (2020-21). Denver also was dominant in his personal bouts taking second place twice at the NAIA National Championship in (2019-20, 2020-21) and finally winning a NAIA Title in 2021-22 season.
Director of Athletics,
Jessica Yonkers had this to say about Denver, "We're excited to welcome
Denver Stonecheck to our athletics family as the new head coach of our wrestling program. Coach Stonecheck brings a competitive spirit, a deep understanding of the sport, and a heart for mentoring young athletes. His commitment to building a Christ-centered culture rooted in discipline, integrity, and growth aligns perfectly with our mission. We're confident he will lead our student-athletes with excellence and purpose, both on the mat and in life."
Coach Stonecheck had this to say when asked about the opportunity, "I began wrestling in fifth grade because my dad thought I had no future in basketball! I made great friends and was good at the sport. I earned a scholarship to wrestle at Life University. There, I hit rock bottom due to poor lifestyle choices by my second season (2017-18), red-shirted my third year (2018-19), and finally made a comeback. In May of 2022, I moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to marry my wife who is from here. I met Chris Williamson in the summer of 2022, and we established a great connection. He welcomed me into the Cornerstone Wrestling family from the beginning, and I have spent the last three + years serving as an assistant wrestling coach and mindset coach for the Cornerstone University wrestling team. I have been blessed with the opportunity to assist our staff in coaching
Trevor Marsman, our first NAIA All-American (3X All-American, in fact!!!), and have been blessed with the opportunity to pour into so many young men through the Cornerstone University wrestling program. As Ecclesiastes 2:24 communicates, finding satisfaction in one's work is a pleasure that comes from the hand of God. The most fulfilling work I do is coaching wrestling, and I am so thankful God has blessed me with the opportunity to become the next head wrestling coach at Cornerstone University. I am thankful for Chris Williamson, who brought me on board and believed in my abilities as a coach from day one, and for all his hard work and dedication to this program. I am excited to work with all my heart to bring God glory in this role and help Cornerstone University wrestling do the same, both on and off the mat."
We are excited to have you Coach Stonecheck!
