Ohio University Wrestling Expands Opportunities with New NCWA Program

Student Leader Josh Alexander Builds New Wrestling Team, Attracting More Than 25 Athletes

ATHENS, OH – November 4, 2026 – A passion for wrestling and a determination to continue competing have inspired Ohio University junior Josh Alexander to establish a new collegiate wrestling program that will compete in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) during the 2026–27 season.

Alexander, a marketing major and president of Ohio University's NCWA wrestling team, comes from a family deeply rooted in athletics. His father and two brothers competed in NCAA Division I wrestling, while his sister played Division II field hockey. With 18 years of wrestling experience himself, Alexander was determined to continue the family tradition.

After falling short of earning a roster position on Ohio University's NCAA Division I wrestling team, Alexander faced the possibility of leaving competitive wrestling behind. Rather than walking away from the sport, he saw an opportunity to create something new.

"After not making the roster for Ohio University's NCAA Division I wrestling team, I had to consider what I wanted my college experience to look like without the sport that had shaped so much of my life," Alexander explained. "I realized I still wanted to compete and continue my family's wrestling tradition, even if my path looked different."

During his sophomore year, Alexander began organizing a new wrestling team, quickly attracting more than 25 interested student-athletes from across the university. Many brought extensive wrestling backgrounds and a shared desire to continue competing at the collegiate level. That enthusiasm encouraged Alexander to pursue membership in the NCWA, opening the door to regional competition and an opportunity to qualify for the NCWA National Championships.

Building a program from the ground up has presented challenges, particularly in securing financial support. Without an established funding base, Alexander and his teammates turned to friends, family, and the wrestling community for assistance. Their efforts have helped lay the foundation for a program they hope will serve Ohio University students for years to come.

Beyond simply fielding a competitive team, Alexander hopes the program will bring greater attention and respect to collegiate club wrestling.

"I believe it is often overlooked because it does not receive the same attention or regular viewership as other levels of collegiate wrestling," Alexander said. "Our athletes bring years of experience, dedication, and competitive drive to the mat."

The team's immediate goals include developing a strong practice environment, maintaining academic success, and establishing a competitive culture. Longer-term ambitions include qualifying wrestlers for the NCWA National Championships and producing All-Americans.

For Alexander, however, the program's ultimate success will be measured by more than wins and losses. His vision is to establish a lasting wrestling tradition at Ohio University, ensuring future students have the same opportunity to continue pursuing the sport they love.

"We are grateful for the support we have received and for the opportunity to compete this season, represent Ohio University, and continue our wrestling careers," Alexander said.

The addition of Ohio University reflects the NCWA's continuing mission to expand collegiate wrestling opportunities and provide student-athletes with competitive pathways beyond traditional NCAA varsity programs.
