Springfield, Mass. - Springfield College and Director of Athletics, Dr. Craig Poisson, is proud to announce the addition of women's wrestling as the college's newest NCAA varsity sport, expanding opportunities for student-athletes and reinforcing the institution's longstanding commitment to excellence in athletics and education. 

Women's wrestling has experienced remarkable growth across the country in recent years, becoming one of the fastest-growing collegiate sports. Springfield College is proud to join this movement expanding its range of athletics offerings to 27 sports with women's wrestling becoming the first varsity program added to the college since 1980. The women's wrestling team will begin competition at the start of the 2027-28 academic year and a national search for a head coach will begin immediately.

"The addition of women's wrestling aligns strongly with Springfield College's strategic initiatives. Given the significant growth of girls' high school wrestling programs, adding women's wrestling responds to the increasing interest and participation of today's female student-athletes," said Poisson. "Beyond meeting this demand, Springfield College is uniquely positioned to attract and recruit young women because of its unwavering commitment to the Humanics Philosophy, which serves as the foundation for all that we do. This distinctive approach prepares student-athletes to thrive not only on the mat, but also in the classroom and as actively engaged members of their communities."

According to the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Coalition (WCWC), Springfield College is the 133rd NCAA institution to offer women's wrestling and the 82nd Division III program joining ten Division I teams and 42 Division II teams. The popularity of women's wrestling resulted in the NCAA declaring it as its 91st championship sport in January of 2025 and the NCAA hosted its first National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship in March of 2026.

Springfield will be only the third program in Massachusetts to have varsity women's wrestling joining Western New England University in Springfield and Emmanuel College in Boston and only the fifth program in the New England region to sponsor the sport joining Maine Maritime, New England College and Norwich in addition to the aforementioned institutions.
